Konihi Kore – Predator Free Future invites ākonga to explore what makes Aotearoa New Zealand’s wildlife so unique and why many of our endemic species are found nowhere else on Earth.

Learners investigate how habitat loss, urbanisation, and introduced mammal predators have changed ecosystems over time, impacting native birds, reptiles, insects, and other wildlife. 

Through hands-on investigations, students become biodiversity detectives, using real conservation tools to identify the species living in their local environment and uncover clues about the health of local ecosystems. They explore why some introduced species have been so successful, the challenges this creates for native wildlife, and how predator control and habitat restoration can help biodiversity recover. 

Drawing on their discoveries and new found knowledge, ākonga will have the opportunity to discuss how local actions can contribute to big change. They will review monitoring techniques, habitat improvements, cutting edge conservation tools and begin turning talk into action within their own neighbourhood. 

Along the way, they consider how science, innovation, kaitiakitanga, and collective action can help create a thriving future for New Zealand’s native species and contribute to the Predator Free 2050 vision.
