Street Art Explorers
About this programme
What happens when art, te taio and the built enviroment come together?
Ākonga will discover the stories behind New Plymouth’s vibrant street art before creating their own mural project. They will take part in an inspiring tour of the striking murals at Huatoki Plaza, where they will explore how public art can be used as a powerful tool for creativity, communication, and environmental awareness.
During the tour they will explore the techniques, themes, and messages within these artworks, discovering how street art reflects community values and sparks conversations about our environment. Through guided discussion and observation, ākonga will see how artists use colour, scale, and symbolism to communicate ideas in public spaces.
Building on their learning, ākonga will work in groups to design their own mural concept with an environmental focus. They will bring these ideas to life as bold chalk drawings along the walkway near Len Lye’s Wind Wand.
