About this programme

What lies beneath the waves just beyond Taranaki’s shoreline?

Dive into a hidden underwater world and discover what makes Taranaki unique. Ākonga explore rich marine ecosystems, encounter the species that live beneath the surface, and begin to understand the relationships that help these environments thrive.

Through the story of Project Reef, ākonga use virtual reality to investigate this remarkable local rocky reef, a home to a rich diversity of fish, invertebrates, seaweeds, and other marine life.

Taking on the role of marine scientists, ākonga observe closely, ask questions, and consider why marine protection matters. Together, they explore how human activity affects ocean environments and how science can help us understand and care for these special places.

Come beneath the surface, discover Taranaki’s marine world, and imagine meaningful actions that support the health and future of our moana.
