What secrets are hiding inside the stones of Taranaki?
Come and become a rock detective! In this hands-on learning adventure, ākonga look closely, wonder aloud, and search for clues hidden in rocks and fossils. Together, we explore how Taranaki Maunga has shaped the land and discover what local stones can reveal about our region’s remarkable past.
Dig deeper as geological explorers in the Whakarūaumoko: Active Earth Exhibition handling specimens, asking questions, and investigating fossils found across Taranaki. These ancient traces reveal that much of the region once lay beneath the sea, helping ākonga imagine changing coastlines, unfamiliar environments, and the creatures that lived here millions of years ago.
By unlocking the stories held in stone, learners build curiosity, share their ideas, and make exciting connections with Taranaki’s ever-changing landscape.
