Cloaked in Memory I He Korowai Maumahara
About this Programme:
How can we explore identity and connections to tūpuna through art?
Inspired by the Kiingi Tuheitia Portraiture Award, this lesson invites ākonga to explore how young Māori artists use a range of media to express whakapapa and identity. In the exhibition ākonga will encounter diverse styles, materials, and approaches to storytelling with the aim of deepening their understanding of how identity can be communicated visually.
Ākonga begin their art making in the exhibition by capturing symbols and patterns that may help create their story of someone special. Adding to these they draw a korowai which cloaks their special person’s portrait. Students also have the opportunity to dress in kākahu and korowai and be photographed by their kaiako.
This special opportunity runs for 3 months only. Don't miss out.
