Architecture & Design Tour
About this programme
How do buildings reflect place, identity, and purpose?
Journey into two of Taranaki’s landmark cultural institutions: the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery | Len Lye Centre and Puke Ariki Museum. Ākonga will uncover the creative problem-solving and design decisions behind these striking buildings, examining how form, materials, and layout respond to natural, cultural and historical contexts. Next, they will explore how architecture can express purpose, represent Te Ao Māori and mana whenua, and support contemporary exhibition-making. At the Art Gallery, students will gain rare behind-the-scenes access, tracing artworks from our back-of-house spaces onto the gallery floor.
Note: This session is designed for secondary DVC, Tourism, and Design classes, this programme is also suitable for primary schools studying built environments. Share your learning focus—we’ll tailor the experience to suit your ākonga.
Optional extensions can include tourism perspectives, career pathways, and hands-on model making for senior primary learners.
