Animate like Len Lye
About this programme
How can animation be created without a camera or a computer?
Step into the world of early animation and discover how movement, rhythm, and sound come together through the films of Len Lye. In this lively, hands-on programme, students will explore the art of cameraless filmmaking that create bold contemporary images.
Students will investigate how simple marks can generate movement, how sound and rhythm can influence visual energy, and how the body can be used to interpret animations in motion. Next, they’ll experiment with abstract animation techniques, creating dynamic handmade works that ziggle, and pulse with colour and pattern.
Highlight: Teachers are encouraged to bring a device so students can record and reflect on their creations.Â
Hands-on options can include zoetrope drawings, colour projection experiments, and collaborative 16mm film-making (secondary only).
