Tukutuku: The Lattice Panels
About this programme
What stories do these patterns tell?
This library-based workshop places hands-on discovery at the heart of the learning experience. Students begin by engaging with tukutuku panels investigating traditional patterns and the cultural knowledge woven into each design. Through guided activities, they learn about tukutuku, also known as arapaki, and investigate how patterns connect to art, identity, storytelling, mathematics, and whakapapa.
A key feature of the session is practical making. Students will thread their own patterns into small panel boards, experimenting with repetition, geometry, colour, and personal expression. This tactile experience supports fine motor development while deepening understanding of how tukutuku communicates ideas, values, and stories across generations.
Support materials, including optional pre and post visit activities are available when booking or by request, helping kaiako extend learning in meaningful and engaging ways.
